The landscape of counselling today seems to lend itself to brief counselling. Brief counselling can be defined as approaches that are geared towards fewer sessions, which can mean from 1-20 sessions. Many of the traditional counselling approaches have adapted their methods to accommodate this style of intervention after seeing the efficacy and practicality. As counselling is not covered under most medical benefit plans, with limits being places on the number of sessions available through employee assistance programs and non-profit agencies. The benefits of brief therapy include more affordability for clients, and shorter waitlists.
Research supports brief interventions. There is also evidence supporting the efficacy of short-term approaches working with clients with trauma and BPD. De Jongh et al. (2020) tested the effectiveness of an eight-day intensive treatment of EMDR, prolonged exposure, physical activity and psychoeducation, and found it to significantly reduce BPD symptoms, with medium to large effect sizes and no dropout or adverse events and symptom deterioration. Their sample was 72 people with PTSD, half with the diagnosis of dissociative type due to multiple traumas, in which 35 people screened positive for BPD upon entry to the treatment. Roughly 30 per cent of those with a positive BPD screen at entry lost this status following treatment.
